El Jugo - Colombia Single Origin

Our light roast Colombian superstar, “El Jugo” (‘the juice’) has been a Karol staple from the beginning. Not only does this selection have a balanced, bright flavor that performs beautifully on pourover or drip, but its source has a great story and mission.

Asociación de Productores Egológicos de Planadas (ASOPEP) is a co-op in the Tolima region of Colombia, and is one of the most successful despite only existing for a little over a decade.

ASOPEP provides opportunities to younger members to learn about the process of cupping (assessing the quality and tasting notes of coffee), quality control, and barista skills along with business management and education in science and technology. This approach to introducing the farmers to the global coffee industry is essential for assuring that they have autonomy over their crop, how its used, and where it goes.

Karol’s take on this Colombian jewel is that we want the bean to speak for itself. The high quality of the coffee that comes out of this co-op doesn’t need heavy roasting to expose the complex flavors - the super light roasting is all it needs. You start out with fruity, punchy notes, but as the flavor develops, you end with an unexpectedly nutty, sweet finish, that leaves you feeling refreshed.
